Creation and management of a Reference Data Dictionary

Project background
Despite its position at leader, the brand was finding it difficult to keep pace with changes in its market. In 2014, the decision was taken to transform the offering and offer consumers a new user experience through a reform of the store concept.
To support this essential transformation, the company has embarked on a vast program to overhaul its information system, using a ERP approach.
As a prerequisite to replacing the existing system, which is totally " home made ", it was essential to know what data assets were in place, particularly in terms of repositories. This knowledge was intended to :
- Identify the data managed by different applications.
- Evaluate data quality.
- Estimate the data required in the target system.
- Evaluate and configure the transfer of data from the old system to the new one.
Our approach
Our approach consisted of several steps coordinated with the company's teams:
- Data mapping with sample extraction to assess the quality and completeness of information.
- Work with business units to categorize mapped data, validate semantics, and select data with reference value.
- Creating a shared, dynamic dictionary.
- Implementation of a dictionary maintenance process and appointment of a dictionary manager.

- Take stock of the company's actual information assets
- Standardize reference data semantics and formats
- Manage a true dictionary of references, enabling rapid analysis of the impact of changes to the old system made necessary by the development of the new one
